"Debby and Larry Kline work conceptually with the themes of spectacle and
monument, harnessing invisible forces to create monuments that are both troubling
and compelling. The Electric Fields of California are site-specific fluorescent
light installations spanning the state of California. The Klines discovered
that the ambient electricity generated by electric towers is sufficient to
illuminate fluorescent tubes. They construct monuments consisting of vast
fields of these tubes inserted in the ground near the base of the towers.
The last in this series was installed in northern California in fall 2004
on Highway 37, at Sears Point."
